GLP-1 Medications

What are GLP-1 medications?

GLP-1 medications are a class of drugs specifically aimed at aiding weight management and are used in the treatment of obesity and type-2 diabetes. They are named after the natural hormone they mimic, Glucagon-like Peptide-1 (GLP-1), which your body produces and is secreted by intestinal enteroendocrine L-cells and certain neurons in the brainstem upon food intake.

How do GLP-1 medications help with weight management?

GLP-1 medications work by mimicking the natural GLP-1 hormone, which is released by your intestines after you eat. This hormone plays a critical role in signaling to your brain that you are full, helping to control your appetite. By leveraging this mechanism, GLP-1 medications make you feel fuller sooner and longer after eating, which can lead to reduced calorie intake and subsequent weight loss. GLP-1s are also valuable for improving blood sugar levels, offering a dual benefit for individuals with obesity and type 2 diabetes.

What benefits can I expect from using GLP-1 medications for weight loss?

When using GLP-1 medications, you might experience several benefits including a notable reduction in body weight, decreased appetite, improved blood sugar levels, and even some cardiovascular advantages such as a reduced risk of heart attack and stroke in certain individuals.

Are there any side effects associated with GLP-1 medications?

Yes, while GLP-1 medications can be highly beneficial, they may come with potential side effects. Common side effects include gastrointestinal issues such as nausea and vomiting, a possible increased risk of pancreatitis, low blood sugar levels especially when combined with other medications, and reactions at the injection site. It is also important to note that these medications are not recommended for individuals with certain medical histories related to thyroid cancer.

Will I lose a lot of muscle on a GLP-1 medication?

There’s a lot of noise about GLP-1 medications and loss of muscle mass. This is not a direct side effect of the medication, but is something that people can experience if they don’t recognize the important role of nutrition and fitness. Remember, GLP-1 medications are just one part of the wellness journey. Nutrition and fitness are the keys to achieving lasting results and metabolic well-being.

How do I know if GLP-1s are the right choice for my weight loss journey?

Deciding if GLP-1 medications are suitable for you involves an evaluation with a medical provider. They will consider your individual health status, weight loss goals, and any potential risks to determine if this treatment aligns with your needs and health.

Will I have to be on a GLP-1 medication forever?

At Thrive, we don't want you to be on a GLP-1 forever, but we also don't want you to lose all of your progress when you stop taking it. We believe GLP-1 medications can help kickstart your upwards spiral with the support of our nutrition and fitness experts. Our goal is to help you create sustainable changes and lasting results, even when you are no longer on a GLP-1.

Semaglutide

What is semaglutide and how does it work?

Semaglutide belongs to a class of medications known as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, or GLP-1 RAs.

Semaglutide contributes to weight loss by mimicking the action of the hormone GLP-1, which helps regulate your appetite and reduce cravings. It slows gastric emptying, enhances satiety, and reduces hunger, leading to a lower caloric intake.

Additionally, it improves glycemic control by stimulating insulin secretion and inhibiting glucagon release.

What are the safety considerations and potential side effects when using semaglutide for weight loss?

When using semaglutide for weight loss, safety considerations and potential side effects are crucial to understand. Common side effects include gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain.

There is also a risk of more serious side effects, including pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, and changes in vision. Additionally, significant appetite reduction could result in nutritional deficiencies if not managed with a balanced diet.

It is essential to discuss these potential risks and side effects with your healthcare provider to ensure it aligns with your health goals and conditions.

How does semaglutide support long-term weight management and overall health?

Semaglutide supports long-term weight management and overall health through multiple mechanisms, primarily by acting on the GLP-1 receptors to regulate appetite and improve insulin sensitivity. This action not only aids in reducing caloric intake by enhancing feelings of satiety and reducing hunger but also helps in slowing down gastric emptying, which contributes to prolonged feelings of fullness.

Additionally, semaglutide has been shown to have a positive impact on metabolic health, including improving blood glucose levels and potentially reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases by improving parameters such as blood pressure and lipid profiles.

The sustained weight loss achieved with semaglutide, as evidenced in clinical trials, suggests minimal weight regain over time when therapy is continued, highlighting its role in long-term weight management. Moreover, the reduction in appetite and changes in food preferences towards lower-fat options contribute to a healthier diet, further supporting overall health.

How essential is maintaining a healthy lifestyle while using semaglutide for weight loss?

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle while using semaglutide for weight loss is essential and is strongly recommended to complement the medication's effects. Semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, contributes to weight loss by reducing appetite and caloric intake, but it should not replace exercise and dietary changes.

Instead, it is an adjunct treatment designed to enhance the benefits of a healthy diet and regular physical activity. Lifestyle changes such as adopting a healthier diet, increasing physical activity, and making behavioral changes are crucial for achieving long-term weight reduction and health benefits.

Tirzepatide

What is tirzepatide and how does it work?

Tirzapatide is a glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptor and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist.

Tirzepatide combines the actions of GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonists, providing a greater reduction in appetite than semaglutide alone. By mimicking the two hormones, it helps to improve insulin sensitivity, reduce hunger, and increase your metabolic rate.

What is GIP and how is it different than GLP-1?

GIP (Glucose-dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide) and GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1) are both important hormones released after eating to help regulate your insulin levels, but they have some key differences.

GIP is primarily found in the upper part of your small intestine and is known for its role in managing insulin in response to meals, particularly those rich in glucose and fats. On the other hand, GLP-1, which comes from a different part of the gut, not only helps with insulin but also has a broader range of benefits, including reducing appetite, slowing down how quickly your stomach empties after eating, and even having protective effects on the brain.

While GLP-1 has been used successfully in treating diabetes and aiding in weight loss, GIP's potential is still being explored, particularly when used together with GLP-1. This distinction makes GLP-1 a particularly valuable tool in managing blood sugar levels and weight, offering more than just insulin regulation.

What should I know before using tirzepatide for weight loss?

Those considering tirzepatide for weight loss should be aware of its administration as a once- weekly subcutaneous injection, which may be accompanied by common side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, and injection site reactions. The medication's dosage should be gradually increased to minimize side effects.

Tirzepatide has been approved for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight conditions in conjunction with a reduced- calorie diet and increased physical activity.

What side effects might I have with tirzepatide, and what can be done about them?

Common side effects of tirzepatide include gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain. Less common but more severe side effects might include difficulty breathing, skin reactions, and signs of liver problems such as yellow eyes or skin.

While many side effects may not require medical attention and could diminish over time, managing more severe reactions might necessitate consulting healthcare professionals promptly. Strategies to mitigate these side effects include starting with a lower dose and gradually increasing it to improve tolerance.

Can tirzepatide significantly impact appetite and energy intake?

Yes, tirzepatide has been shown to significantly reduce appetite and energy intake, contributing to weight loss in individuals with type 2 diabetes. In a study comparing tirzepatide with Semaglutide and a placebo, tirzepatide led to notable reductions in body weight and fat mass, primarily through decreased energy intake at meals. While both tirzepatide and semaglutide reduced appetite, tirzepatide's superior weight loss outcomes suggest that other mechanisms, including increased energy expenditure, also play a role.

How does tirzepatide uniquely stimulate insulin secretion?

Tirzepatide possesses a unique ability to stimulate insulin secretion by targeting two different mechanisms in the body: the GLP-1 and GIP receptors. This dual action enhances the drug's effectiveness in lowering blood glucose levels in those with type 2 diabetes.

Tirzepatide's capacity to activate these receptors not only restores insulin production but also helps in reducing appetite, which contributes to weight loss over time. This dual receptor activation offers a broader range of activity within the body, distinguishing tirzepatide from other diabetes therapies.

GLP-1 Program

How does this process work?

Fill out our quick questionnaire to find out if you qualify. During this process, you will share your medical history, upload photos related to your health concerns, describe your weight loss goals, and provide a government-issued ID. This detailed information is for the medical provider to make a legal and informed medical decision.

A medical provider will then carefully review your information and determine if the treatment you are seeking is right for you. Within a few hours of your submission, you should expect a follow-up from your assigned provider via the contact information you provided during your intake to discuss the next steps. In some cases, a live video consultation may be required before prescription approval. Once approved, your prescription will be mailed directly to you.

Why do I have to upload a photo? What if I don't have a recent photo of myself?

Don't stress about finding the perfect photo. Upload the most recent photo in your camera roll that shows your upper body. It can even include other people!

What do I do if my image won’t upload?

Sometimes, it could be a glitch or a file size issue. Here are a few things you can try: Check File Size to make sure your photos aren't too big. Smaller files usually upload more easily. Double-check if your photos are in an accepted format, like JPEG or PNG. Refresh: Sometimes, a quick refresh of the page can do the trick. Browser or App Update: Ensure your browser or app is up to date for a smoother experience. Check Internet Connection: A stable connection can make all the difference.

How does disqualification work during the intake process?

This decision is made based on clinical guidelines and your health assessment by our licensed medical professionals. However, disqualification in the intake process usually occurs due to certain health-related criteria, such as Body Mass Index (BMI) and the presence of certain comorbidities. In rare cases, unwillingness to commit to reducing caloric intake or to engage in physical activity may also lead to disqualification. These measures are in place to ensure that our services are suitable and safe for your health needs.

How does mail-order pharmacy fulfillment work with the GLP-1 prescription program?

Our GLP-1 prescription program is integrated with mail-order pharmacy fulfillment to ensure you receive your medications conveniently and on time. This service is part of our commitment to providing comprehensive care, making it easier for you to get your weight loss medications without having to leave home. By streamlining the refill process, we also help support your medication adherence, ensuring you have what you need for your health journey.

How will I receive my medication?

After your prescription is filled, the pharmacy will ship your medication directly to you at the address you provided during the checkout process.

Can I continue my dosage from a previous prescription?

Yes. During the intake process, you will have the opportunity to upload a photo of a previous GLP-1 prescription. Your provider will keep you on a similar dose unless there is something in your intake form that is concerning to your provider. When uploading a previous prescription, please include the date, medication name, and dose.

Will my medication come refrigerated?

Injectable medications are shipped with ice packs. Oral medications are not affected by temperature and do not require refrigeration.

How does the refill process work?

When it is time to renew your prescription, you will receive additional emails that include a link to take the renewal assessment, and the receipt for your subscription payment. Keep an eye out for the ‘Refill - Pending’ email from WellSync, our telehealth partner.

The renewal assessment is mandatory - no new prescriptions can be sent without the patient completing and submitting it. Similar to the intake questionnaire, the renewal assessment evaluates your current medical state and allows the medical provider to determine if the treatment should continue with a renewed prescription. You will need to upload a photo as part of the renewal assessment.

Once you complete the renewal assessment, you will receive an email from WellSync that confirms your renewal information has been submitted and is waiting for the clinician’s review. The clinician accepts and thoroughly reviews your case including progress, health status, and any relevant conditions.

If the clinician approves the treatment, then a prescription for the refill is sent to the pharmacy. If the clinician determines that you are unable to continue treatment, you will receive an email from WellSync explaining that your refill has been rejected. You will also receive an automatic refund for the last payment.

Why are subscriptions renewed every 28 days?

Subscriptions are renewed every 28 days. As prescriptions are typically processed and shipped out within 5-7 business days from receiving the order, they time well with the amount of medication a patient currently has left, so long as you do not ignore the refill questionnaire.

Testosterone

What is testosterone and why does it matter?

Testosterone is the hormone that makes men, men. Produced in the testicles, it’s the driving force behind muscle growth, body and facial hair, a deeper voice, and even sperm production. It’s what fuels male sexual development, especially during puberty. But as you age, testosterone levels drop — it’s just biology. For some men, those levels drop too low. That’s called Testosterone Deficiency Syndrome (TD) or Low Testosterone (Low T). When your body doesn’t have enough testosterone, you can feel the difference, and it’s not something you have to accept.

What is T/Free T and why is it important?

T/Free T refers to the ratio of total testosterone (T) to free testosterone (Free T) in the blood. This ratio is used to assess the levels of testosterone that are biologically active and available for use by the body, as opposed to testosterone that is bound to proteins and not readily available. Total testosterone includes all the testosterone in the blood, both bound and unbound, with most of it bound to proteins such as sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and albumin, making it biologically inactive. Free testosterone, on the other hand, is the fraction of testosterone that is not bound to any proteins and is therefore biologically active. This form of testosterone can enter cells and exert its effects on various tissues.

The T/Free T ratio is important because it provides a more accurate picture of the hormonal status and potential clinical conditions than total testosterone alone. For instance, in conditions like hypogonadism, the total testosterone levels might be normal, but the free testosterone levels could be low, indicating a deficiency in biologically active testosterone. Several methods are used to measure free testosterone, including equilibrium dialysis (considered the gold standard but not suitable for routine clinical use), direct immunoassay (which may not be as accurate) , calculated free testosterone derived from total testosterone and SHBG concentrations, and the Free Androgen Index (FAI), which is the ratio of total testosterone to SHBG, providing an estimate of free testosterone levels. Accurate measurement of free testosterone is crucial for diagnosing and managing conditions like hypogonadism, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and other endocrine disorders. Standardization and validation of these measurement methods are essential for reliable clinical assessment.

What are the typical ranges for testosterone levels?

The normal ranges for testosterone levels can vary based on the method of measurement and the population being studied. For adult men, total testosterone levels typically range from 264 to 916 ng/dL in healthy, non-obese men aged 19 to 39 years, with calculated free testosterone levels ranging from 0.23 to 0.63 nmol/L.

In specific populations, such as older men with low or low-normal testosterone levels, the range is defined as total testosterone between 100 to 400 ng/dL or free testosterone less than 50 pg/mL. For aging men with low-normal testosterone levels, the range is 6-14 nmol/L. The method of measurement, such as tandem mass spectrometry, can affect reference ranges due to its accuracy, with harmonized values for total testosterone in men aged 19 to 39 years being 264 to 916 ng/dL.

What are signs of low testosterone in men?

Low testosterone, or hypogonadism, hits hard in many areas—physically, sexually, emotionally, and mentally. Physically, it can lead to fatigue, muscle loss, weaker bones, added body fat, and urinary issues. Sexually, men may face a drop in libido, erectile dysfunction, and fewer morning erections. Emotionally and mentally, it can trigger depression, mood swings, and problems with focus and memory. Other signs include hair loss, breast tissue development (gynecomastia), and infertility. These symptoms can seriously impact your quality of life, so it’s important to get checked if you’re experiencing any of them.

How do I verify that my testosterone is low?

Verifying low testosterone levels involves both clinical evaluation and laboratory testing. Clinically, symptoms such as fatigue, reduced muscle mass, increased body fat, decreased bone density, reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, mood changes, depression, and cognitive decline are assessed. A thorough medical history, including chronic illnesses and medications that might affect hormone levels, is reviewed. Reference ranges typically consider total testosterone levels below 300 ng/dL and free testosterone below 50 pg/mL as low. Results should be correlated with symptoms to make an accurate diagnosis. It's also crucial to investigate and manage any underlying conditions that might contribute to low testosterone. A laboratory panel containing Testosterone, Free Testosterone, SHBG, PSA, Estradiol, and CBC is collected at initial, three months, six months, and every 6 months thereafter.

What is Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT)?

Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) is a treatment for men with low testosterone levels, a condition known as hypogonadism. Symptoms of hypogonadism can include decreased libido, fatigue, and loss of muscle mass.

To qualify for TRT, you need to have low serum testosterone levels (below 300 to 350 ng/dL) on two separate morning tests and show symptoms of hypogonadism. TRT comes in different forms, such as topical gels and intramuscular injections, and the choice depends on factors like cost and your preference.

While TRT can effectively improve symptoms and enhance quality of life, it requires careful selection, shared decision-making with your doctor, and close monitoring due to potential risks. Studies have shown that TRT can help improve symptoms and quality of life in men with low testosterone levels, but there are concerns about possible cardiovascular risks and long-term safety. Guidelines for TRT emphasize the need for personalized treatment plans and following clinical recommendations to avoid misuse. Despite some controversies, TRT is a commonly used treatment for hypogonadism, with ongoing research to better understand its benefits and risks.

KYZATREX®

What is KYZATREX® and how does it work?

KYZATREX® is an FDA-approved, twice-daily oral capsule for testosterone replacement therapy in adult males with conditions associated with deficiency or absence of endogenous testosterone, also known as hypogonadism. It helps increase testosterone levels, addressing issues like reduced libido, fatigue, and muscle loss.

KYZATREX® is absorbed through the lymphatic system, avoiding the liver’s initial breakdown, which helps maintain stable testosterone levels.  Once in the body, KYZATREX® converts to active testosterone, which binds to receptors in muscles, bones, and other tissues, improving energy, sex drive, and muscle mass. Testosterone works by binding to androgen receptors, which then regulate genes involved in male health and development. This process supports muscle growth, bone density, and sexual function—making KYZATREX® a powerful solution for tackling low testosterone levels.

How is the KYZATREX® testosterone therapy administered?

KYZATREX® testosterone therapy is administered orally, in pill form. This method is designed to be convenient and maintain stable testosterone levels in the body. Oral testosterone undecanoate is effective for increasing testosterone levels in individuals with hypogonadism. Compared to traditional methods like injections, patches, or gels, the oral form is less invasive and can improve compliance and comfort.

Is KYZATREX® safe? Will it hurt my liver?

KYZATREX® is safe—for you and your liver. We’ve designed our formula to be gentle on your body while delivering powerful results.

Our oral TRT is designed for optimal absorption—bypassing your liver to prevent damage. This means you can experience the benefits of TRT without the potential liver strain associated with other forms of TRT.

What are the potential benefits of KYZATREX® testosterone therapy?

KYZATREX® testosterone therapy can offer several benefits for individuals with testosterone deficiency. It can improve sexual function by enhancing libido and erectile function, and it can boost mood and emotional well-being by alleviating symptoms of depression, irritability, and fatigue. TRT can also increase muscle mass and strength, improve bone density, and help prevent osteoporosis.

For individuals with type 2 diabetes, TRT can improve glycemic control and insulin sensitivity. Additionally, TRT may positively impact cardiovascular health, cognitive functions like memory and processing speed, and overall quality of life. However, TRT should be administered under medical supervision, with regular monitoring to ensure safety and manage potential risks such as increased red blood cell count and cardiovascular concerns.

What are the benefits of KYZATREX® compared to other testosterone replacement therapies?

KYZATREX® is taken orally, which is more convenient than injections or gels. It causes only small increases in blood pressure, mainly in those on blood pressure meds, and has minimal impact on heart rate. It doesn't significantly affect red blood cell levels, reducing the risk of polycythemia compared to injections. KYZATREX®  also has a stable cardiovascular profile, making it a good option for those needing testosterone replacement.

Can KYZATREX® testosterone therapy treat erectile dysfunction (ED)?

KYZATREX® testosterone therapy can be used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED), particularly in men with low testosterone levels (hypogonadism). Studies show that testosterone therapy can significantly improve ED symptoms in hypogonadal men, with 91.9% of young men with organic ED reporting improvement after therapy. Combining testosterone therapy with PDE5 inhibitors, like sildenafil, has proven effective for men who do not respond to PDE5 inhibitors alone, restoring erectile function in 70% of diabetic participants. Long-term testosterone therapy has shown benefits in improving erectile function in men with functional hypogonadism and obesity, with significant improvements noted over up to 13 years. Testosterone therapy has also been effective in men with venous leakage, with some reporting significant improvement within 12-20 weeks of treatment. Additionally, in men with type 2 diabetes and hypogonadism, long-acting testosterone undecanoate improved sexual function and quality of life, including better IIEF scores. Regular monitoring and a tailored approach by healthcare providers are essential to maximize benefits and manage potential risks.

What are the potential side effects of KYZATREX® testosterone therapy?

KYZATREX® may cause a small increase in 24-hour ambulatory systolic blood pressure, especially in those on antihypertensive therapy. Diastolic blood pressure and heart rate changes are minimal. Other potential side effects include headaches, mood changes, and increased red blood cell count. Monitoring is recommended for patients with hypertension or those on antihypertensive drugs to manage potential risks.

What is the clinical efficacy of KYZATREX®?

KYZATREX® effectively increases serum testosterone levels, with 87.8% of participants reaching normal levels. It alleviates symptoms like fatigue, reduced libido, and muscle loss, and improves overall well-being and psychosexual health. The drug has a stable cardiovascular profile, causing only small increases in systolic blood pressure, with minimal impact on diastolic blood pressure and heart rate. KYZATREX® is well tolerated, with no serious adverse events reported in clinical trials.

TRT Prescriptions and Refills

Who are your pharmacy partners?

Thrive exclusively works with US based 503A and 503B pharmacies.

Who are the providers writing these prescriptions?

WellSync connects patients with licensed and experienced healthcare providers, including physicians, nurse practitioners, and specialists, ensuring safe and personalized medication management and high-quality care for each patient. For more information please contact support@wellsync.com.

How does my prescription get to the pharmacy?

Your doctor will submit your prescription directly to the pharmacy electronically. The pharmacy then takes over to fill your prescription in preparation for shipping to your provided shipping address.

How will I receive my medication?

After your prescription is filled, the pharmacy will ship your medication directly to you at the address you provided during the checkout process.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of KYZATREX®, take the missed dose as soon as possible if you remember shortly after. However, if it is nearly time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and do not take a double dose to make up for it. Continue with your regular dosing schedule after taking the missed dose or skipping it. If you are unsure about what to do after missing a dose, or if you miss multiple doses, contact your healthcare provider for specific advice. Always refer to the specific instructions provided by your healthcare provider or the medication's prescribing information.

How does the refill process work?

The refill process differs slightly depending on the month of treatment. During the first phase of treatment, another round of lab work and another virtual appointment are required before the fourth month of medication can be sent.

Month 2 and 3 Refills: About 27 days after the initial prescription is sent, you will receive an email to confirm your refill, and pay for the second month of medication. Once completed, the second month will be shipped out. The process is the same for month 3.

Month 4 Refill: After receiving your third month of medication, you will be prompted to complete a refill questionnaire similar to the initial intake form, as well as have lab work completed again- this is because every 3 months, another virtual visit with a provider is required in order to be eligible to continue with the program.

Therefore, by prompting you to get bloodwork done again during this time, the results will be ready for a provider to review after that third month so patients can keep up with their treatment schedule and avoid any delays.

The refill questionnaire is a prerequisite to the virtual check-in. It helps gather information from you, as well as gives the provider an idea of what to expect or which additional questions and topics they should bring up during your virtual visit.

Future Refills: After receiving the fourth month of medication, the process repeats the same as when you were first accepted and received your first month of medication. However, after the 6 month bloodwork and check-in, while a virtual visit with a provider is still required every 3 months, new blood work is only required every 6 months. This means for months 9, 15, and so on, you will receive an email indicating you need to schedule a virtual visit with their provider, but not get new bloodwork done.

When will my KYZATREX® be refilled?

Your medication will be refilled after the initial 30-day supply. The subsequent refills are scheduled to ensure there is no interruption in your therapy. The refills are processed 27 days after your initial and each subsequent visit, aligning with your treatment plan.

What if I run out of KYZATREX® refills?

After the initial prescription and two refills, you will need to be reassessed by your medical provider. This will align with your scheduled follow-up visits. During these visits, your medical provider will review your progress and lab results to determine if your prescription should be continued or adjusted.

When is payment processed for refills?

When it’s time for your refill, we will email you with a link to complete payment for your next month of medication. Over the course of your treatment plan, you may also be asked to answer a short questionnaire to monitor how your treatment is going.
